See where a photo was taken, then strip the GPS data without re-compressing it.

**Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.** Your files are processed on this device and never leave it. You can even switch off your internet once the page has loaded.

Formats: JPEG, HEIC, MP4, MOV. This is an interactive tool: open [the page](https://trysecretgrid.com/tools/remove-photo-location) in a browser to use it.

## How it works

1. Drop one or more photos or videos. They're read in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
2. For JPEG photos you'll see the location they reveal. HEIC, MP4 and MOV files are checked for location too.
3. The GPS data is blanked in place. The picture or video itself is untouched: no re-compression, no quality loss.
4. Download the cleaned copy and share that one instead of the original.

## Questions

### Why remove location from photos?

Phones save where each photo was taken. Anyone who receives the original file can see that spot, which often means your home, school or workplace.

### Does this reduce photo quality?

No. Only the location data is changed; the image and video data are copied as they are.

### What else is kept?

Camera details, date taken and orientation stay. Embedded XMP metadata is removed from JPEGs, since it can repeat the location.

### Do messaging apps already remove location?

Many strip it when you send a photo, but not when you send it as a file or document, and email, cloud links and file transfers usually keep it.

### Is this the same code as the SecretGrid app?

Yes. SecretGrid runs the same location remover on every photo and video you add to a vault.
